This documents how to upload and download with FileZilla. It does not include information on how to install or configure it FileZIlla. For that refer to the FileZilla wiki.
This documentation assumes all aspects of FileZilla have been correctly configured.
Anatomy of the FileZilla Window
For the purposes of training it makes sense to consider the FileZilla window component by component. In the image below the various components have been numbered (1, 2, 3 . . .). Those numbers correspond to the numbered paragraphs below:
1. Toolbar
The toolbar contains buttons you can use to change how FileZilla looks, as well as other basic functions. For your purposes (that is, for uploading and downloading files) the only toolbar buttons you are likely to need are:
Refresh the file and folder lists
Cancel the current operation
Disconnect from the server
Re-connect to the last used server
Refer to the FileZilla wiki for more information about the toolbar.
2. Quick Connect Bar
The quick connect bar allows you to connect to other servers quickly and easily. If FileZilla has been set up and configured properly on your computer, the fields for Host, Username, Password, and Port (if applicable) should already be populated. To connect, you merely need to click Quickconnect.
3. Message Log
The message log displays transfer and connection related messages.
4. Local Panel
The left panel displays your local files and directories, otherwise known as the stuff on your computer. It’s referred to as the local panel.
5. Remote Panel
The right panel displays the files and directories on the server you are connected to, otherwise known as the stuff on the other computer. It’s referred to as the remote panel.
NOTE: Both panels have a directory tree at the top and a detailed listing of the currently selected directory's contents at the bottom. You can easily navigate either of the trees or lists by clicking around like in any other file manager.
6. Transfer Queue
At the bottom of the window, the transfer queue lists the to-be-transferred and already transferred files.
Uploading
- In the quick connect bar, click on Quick Connect to connect to the remote server.
- In the local panel, navigate to the files (or directories) you want to upload. When those files (or directories) are visible in the local panel, proceed to the remote panel.
- Navigate around the remote panel until you find the correct destination for the upload.
- Click on the file (or directory) you want to upload, and drag it to the target directory in the remote panel.
- Click the disconnect from server button.
NOTE: You will notice that the file (or directory) will be added to the transfer queue (zone 6) at the bottom of the window. The file (or directory) will stay visible in the transfer queue zone until the transfer is complete. This might take a second or several minutes, depending on the size of the upload. When the upload is complete, you will be able to see the file in the transfer queue under the successful transfers tab. You will also see the uploaded file (or directory) in the remote panel at the location you selected.
